Astronomical symbols, abstract depictions employed in European astronomy, represent celestial entities, theories, and events. Originating in ancient Greek papyrus documents, these symbols evolved through Byzantine manuscripts, expanding their repertoire. They adapted to represent new discoveries, planets, and asteroids from the 18th to 21st centuries. Initially embraced by various groups, including astronomers, alchemists, and astrologers, these symbols persist in almanacs and astrological works. Some, like sun and earth symbols, serve in constants and zodiacs. Yet, their presence in research and texts is scarce except for the vernal equinox. Unicode encompasses these symbols, mainly in miscellaneous, arrow, glyph, and alchemical blocks.
